Paddleboards on Baby Beach in Dana Point Harbor

This morning I had the chance to take a mother and her 11‑year‑old daughter out for a stand‑up paddleboarding session in Dana Point Harbor—one of the best places in Southern California to get on the water.

A Peaceful Morning Paddle in Dana Point Harbor

The weather was perfect: about 71 degrees when we arrived at 9:30 a.m., sunny, calm, and exactly the kind of morning that reminds you why early paddles are the way to go. In Dana Point, the winds.

ecause my guests were newer to paddleboarding, we stayed close and explored the quieter corners of the harbor, away from boat traffic. The tide was high, the water was glassy, and there were hardly any people out—just the kind of peaceful setting that makes paddleboarding feel almost meditative. We spent about an hour and a half gliding along, taking our time, enjoying the stillness, and soaking in the scenery.almost always pick up after 2 p.m., so mornings are ideal for beginners and anyone looking for a smooth, relaxing ride.

A Harbor Full of Music

What made today especially memorable was the unexpected soundtrack. On the little island that divides the harbor, a small group of musicians had gathered with hand drums, bongos, and percussion instruments. Their rhythms carried across the water, giving our paddle an almost tropical, rhythmic backdrop. And as we paddled back in, another trio—three older men—were playing Hawaiian songs that sounded like they came straight out of the 1950s. Their music drifted across the harbor and added the perfect finishing touch to an already beautiful morning

Grateful for Another Day on the Water

The combination of calm water, warm weather, and live music made today feel special. Stand‑up paddleboarding is one of the best ways to experience Dana Point—there’s something about the harbor, the energy, and the views that never gets old.

I’m already looking forward to taking more people out. Sharing these moments on the water is one of my favorite parts of Coastal Explorer USA, and days like this remind me why I love what I do.
