Tonight I revisited a familiar favorite — the 5K Headlands run. I’ve done this route more times than I can count, but this time I approached it with a new purpose: imagining how guests could experience it through the lens of Coastal Explorer USA.
Moving intentionally along the trail, I stopped often to take photos and scout out storytelling spots. I found at least five perfect locations to pause, catch our breath, and share some of the incredible history and local lore that make the Dana Point Headlands such a special place.
What many people don’t realize is that the Headlands we know today almost never existed in this form. For years, the area was at the center of a long, heated battle between developers, nonprofit groups, and the citizens of Dana Point. At one point, the entire bluff was slated for full development — think resorts, multi‑story condos, apartments, and every amenity money could buy.
What changed everything was the discovery of a tiny, protected species that forced developers to scale back their plans. That little creature ended up preserving one of the most iconic natural spaces in Southern California.
I can’t wait to share this story with guests — along with what the Headlands looked like long before the multimillion‑dollar homes below existed. As someone who grew up here, this place has always held a special meaning. I’ve guided hundreds of visitors along these trails during my time with the Ritz‑Carlton, and now I’m thrilled to bring that same passion and knowledge to my own company.
Dana Point is a treasure, and I’m excited to help both locals and visitors experience it in a deeper, more meaningful way.
